Observation Narrative
This 100 sq. m plot contained 87 vascular plant species, about 7 of which are exotics which may have colonized the disturbed soil near a campfire or elsewhere. The bedrock is Elbrook Formation dolomite which readily fractures and forms argillaceous mineral soil material. Elbrook Formation dolomite in Montgomery County usually supports Parthenium hispidum and Packera platensis, but for some reason they are lacking at Bald Rock. Sanguinaria canadensis is the sole mesotrophic indicator in the plot, but the species is rare here and the community nutrient regime best classified as submesotrophic. Juniperus virginiana in plot, 21.5 cm dbh, about 5 m tall.
